Five Important Rummy Terms You Need To Know

There are plenty of terms or vocabulary that you need to know when you play the game of rummy. Five of those terms are: the deal, the stock pile, melding, aces low and laying off. Knowing what these terms mean will help you navigate the world of rummy both online and off, and can help you to better understand rummy playing strategy. Read on to learn more about these five important rummy terms to know.

The Deal – What Is It?

The deal is when the dealer cuts, shuffles, or deals the rummy cards to each player. They are dealt face down, and typically the deal starts with the player to the left of the dealer and then proceeds clockwise distributing cards to each player in the game. In online rummy games the cards are typically dealt this way as well, but the dealer may be a computer generated icon and your place at the table may be determined by when you logged in.

The Stock Pile – What Is It?

The stock pile is the cards that a player can draw from. It is a place down pile of cards or rummy tiles which cannot be seen. A rummy player can typically draw a single card in a turn and since the stock pile is unknown the element of risk and chance go up when a player chooses to do so.

Melding – What Is It?

Melding is how rummy cards are organized when they are played. At least three cards of the same rank create a set, or a meld. Additionally, a meld can consist of at least three cars of the same suit which are the same rank. Melds can be composed of sets or sequences in rummy games.

Aces Low – What Is It?

Gin Rummy is one game that has Aces low as part of the rulebook and it is a standard in the rummy playbook. When Aces are low, they only score one point instead of a higher score such as when the Ace is being played as a face card.

Laying Off – What Is It?

Laying off occurs in rummy games when a player puts down unmatched cards on existing melds that are already on the table. In Gin Rummy, this type of play can only take place when a player knocks. This strategy cannot be used when a player goes Gin.
